FILM SELECTION CALL

In October 2013, the third edition of globale festival will take place in Rio. In order to exhibit your film/video, submit it to registration from June 14^th to August 16^st.

THE FESTIVAL

globale started in Berlin (Germany), in 2003, as a festival of social and political documentaries. Until this day, the purpose of the festival is that its venues keep spreading in order to form a network. Besides Berlin, it currently takes place in two other cities in Germany, in Montevideo (Uruguay, since 2009), Warsaw (Poland, since 2010), in Bogota and in Rio de Janeiro (Colombia and Brazil, both since 2011).

globale Rio is a nonprofit non-competitive festival. Therefore, it hands no awards or charges any registration fee. The globale Film Festival is organized completely on voluntary basis and is only made possible with direct collaboration of the film makers, the public and associated establishments and institutions.

Objectives:

The purposes of the festival are wide:

• Bring public nearer to audiovisual works which render people aware, informed and/or sympathized with aspects of reality usually ignored or distorted by large media corporations.

• Promote interchange, questioning and debating on the globalization process and identify its impacts and consequences on people's lives.

• Reach a wide range of public and, next to it, discuss, elaborate and carry out projects and solutions to problems caused by globalization.

How to submit your movie:

For the selection of films/videos participating in globale Rio 2013, submissions are open from June 14th to August 16^st 2013. In order to submit, fill the form available here and send the audiovisual material in a DVD according to the following instructions.

The Rio de Janeiro edition of globale imposes no restrictions as to genre (ficction, documentary, etc.), format (motion picture, TV show or home-made movies, etc.), length or year of release, neither does it require the films/videos to be previously unreleased. The audiovisual material is expected to approach themes related to globalization process and should fit in one of the following topics:

A. Global City:

Developed in 1991, by the Dutch sociologist Saskia Sassen, the concept of Global City applies to metropolis which receive massive financial influx from abroad and undergo huge transformations in order to host international events, such as The World Cup and the Olympic Games. What are the impacts upon the local and surrounding areas' populations; who benefits from these transformations? How may the affected population organize and deal with such changes?

B. Social and environmental conflicts:

The expansion of nature exploitation borders induces a series of changes in the way people occupy and make use of space; and such modifications unsettle relatively autonomous production forms, responsible for the conservation of the biodiversity and environmental resources. In metropolitan areas as well, environmental inequalities deepen and show tight connections to classes, gender, color and ethnicity disparities. In each country, multiple responses have been given: indigenous populations, quilombola communities, working populations, the young, small farmers, fishermen and gatherers reinforce and recreate their identities, give their territories new meanings and promote the debate on the production model and consumption.

C. Identities and Disparities:

How does globalization affect cultural identities? In a globalized world the experience exchange among several realities is intensified. Are the opportunities the same for all, despite the differences of origin, color, ethnicity, belief, religion, language, sexual orientation, and, especially, in spite of class? At the same time individuals find more references to build their own identities, purism, racism, intolerance and historical disparities grow stronger. These issues are present in all sorts of psychological and practical aspects of everyday life.

D. Powers that be:

Multilateral agencies of international cooperation, multinational corporations, all types of traffic, the Stock market, how has capital been articulated throughout the world? Who has decided the destiny of our lives?

E. Alternative media:

Initiatives questioning mainstream media coverage of news, or presenting an alternative point of view in popular struggles; record of actions eclipsed by mass media, and of alternative media initiatives, featured as free, popular, communitarian and/or radical in the fight for the basic human right to communication.

F. Art activism:

“Tracking shots are a question of morality”, said Godard, the French-Swiss filmmaker. Immanent aspects of artistic language and its techniques are related to politics: they constitute specific ethic universes and directly relate to ideology and power. Beyond the mere instrumental use of art as a means for propaganda, aesthetics experiences in political engagement may come in intensely poetic forms. How does art contribute to questioning the process of economic, cultural, social, political integration due to globalization?

Movies spoken in foreign languages are expected to be subtitled preferably in Portuguese, but may be as well in Spanish or English.

The audiovisual material is to be sent through the mail in a DVD. In the mailing envelope, there must be stated in which of the previously mentioned topics the movie(s) fit (in case more than one film is submitted, they must not necessarily fit in the same topic).

Along with the DVD, its makers must print, sign and send to globale an authorization for exhibition made according to the template available here. In case you do not agree with a certain aspect stated on the template, we ask you to write one on your own terms adjusting it with globale Rio 2013 festival's purposes and propositions.

2012 thematic axis

In 2012, all the submitted audiovisual material should approach topics related to the globalization processes from the following axis:

A. Global City:
The expression Global City was created in 1991, in the works of the Dutch sociologist Saskia Sassen. The concept is applied to the metropolis, which are standards for the international capital in their regions, as cities which went or go through huge transformations to host international events. (The World Cup and the Olympic Games are examples). What are the impacts upon the population in these places and their surroundings; who benefit with those processes?

B. Social and environmental conflicts:
A series of changes is produced by the advance of the border in the exploitation of the nature. It affects how people occupy and use the space, which results in the destabilization of relatively autonomous production forms, responsible for the conservation of the biodiversity and environmental resources. Also in the cities, the environmental inequalities become deeper and are connected to the inequalities of class, gender, color and ethnicity. In each country, there have been multiple answers: indigenous population, communities of quilombolas, workers population, youth, small farmers, fishermen and gatherers reinforce and recreate their identities, give a new meaning to their territories and promote the debate on the production model and consumption.

globale Film Festival Berlin 2011

The 7th edition of globale Film Festival takes place in Berlin, Germany 3-9 November 2011. Film submissions are accepted until June 30th, 2011.

What
We invite filmmakers who use cinema to foreground views, topics and people that market-driven and state-owned media keeps invisible. Past festivals films mainly were concerned with precarious lives, migration, media & representation, genetic engineering, gentrification, working conditions, capitalism and crisis. In addition we usually focus on one or two countries. But, globale is neither restricted to those topics nor to documentary films. So feel free to just give it a try!

globale Rio Calls For Entries

What is globalization after all? How do we operate it? With so many questions about the topic and with the objective of promoting films and debates around the issue, the globale festival lands in Rio de Janeiro promising warm discussion. globale was created in Germany in 2003 and today is also present in two other countries - Uruguay and Poland. Its first edition in Brazil, globale Rio 2011, will be held between 22 and 30 August. The event is proposed to show audiovisual works - free of genre and format - in cinemas, schools, universities, film clubs and cultural centers in different parts of Rio de Janeiro and around the capital.
